Natural Fridge Odor Absorber from Santa Barbara Naturals is a Green Odorless GEL. The active ingredient that makes the product work so well is food-grade carrageenan. Carrageenan is derived from naturally grown seaweed in Korea. The carrageenan is mixed into a water solution (using de-ionized water for purity) and also food grade sodium chloride. The sodium Chloride helps to slow the decay of foods. The gel has a faint smell of chlorine when you first activate – this will disappear after about half an hour – and then the product remains odorless.
The Gel is sealed in the container with a plastic inner plug. It will not start to work until the inner plug is removed ( to do this, remove the white vent cap from the top of the container, then remove the inner plug, then replace the white vent cap firmly). Place the container in the middle of the Fridge in an upright position.
Once activated the Gel evaporates in the Fridge – seeking out the gases and absorbing them at their source. The active gel will reach all parts of a full size refrigerator and give complete odor control for about 12 weeks.
This compares to baking soda which in inactive. The baking soda is usually found on the top shelf of a fridge at the back. The gases in the Fridge need to travel to the baking soda box for it to work. If the gases settle on food before reaching the box then the cross contamination of food flavors occurs. Also, typically, because the baking soda does not evaporate it will last forever – long after it has stopped working. The box most times only gets replaced when it is knocked over and spills in the fridge! Unlike traditional baking soda, the Natural Fridge Odor Absorber gel will not spill if it is knocked over.
The temperature of the fridge is important in order to guarantee the safe storage of food and prevent bacteria developing. The Natural Fridge Odor Absorber has a temperature sensitive sticker on the front of the container. When the temperature in the fridge reaches the recommended 34 – 40 degrees F, the symbol on the sticker reads ‘OK’. It the symbol is not visible, please check your thermostat.
After about 12 weeks the gel will have evaporated down to the renew indicator mark found on the back panel of the container. At this time, remove the container from the fridge and discard. Replace with a new Natural Fridge Odor Absorber unit.
