From focus Group studies we have conducted, the typical family uses their dishwasher in the following way:-

1. Dishes are briefly rinsed after meals to remove larger deposits of food remnants.
2. Breakfast dishes are placed in the dishwasher – but the dishwasher is not cycled.
3. The same after lunch – the dishwasher is not cycled.
4. After dinner – the dishes are placed in the dishwasher and then the dishwasher is cycled as the family leaves the kitchen to go to the family room.

So why does the dishwasher smell?

It’s because the food remnants that stay in the dishwasher through the day start to decompose and decay (read the section “Why does my Fridge smell?” on the Natural Fridge Odor Absorber product page). Also, there is a lot of standing water in the bottom of the dishwasher that is a breeding ground for bacteria. Now of course, you could cycle the dishwasher after every meal to prevent most of the smells – but most families do not do this to be economical in the use of water and dishwasher detergent.

HOW DOES NATURAL DISHWASHER FRESHENER WORK?

Natural Dishwasher Freshener from Santa Barbara Naturals is made from 95% Natural lemon extracts and about 5% de-ionized water. When you buy the item it is sealed so that it will not evaporate. This very fine micro film across the membrane of the product is washed away with the first cycle in the dishwasher to activate the product.

Simply hang the unit in the Dishwasher using the special hook provided, or hang the unit onto one of the prongs on the top shelf by inserting the little hole onto the prong.
